A 'fake' cool change in Sydney for Saturday

Sydney seemed to experience a 'fake' cool change yesterday afternoon as a brief shower dropped temperatures by 3.4 degrees in 10 minutes.

Sydney reached a warm 31 degrees just after midday yesterday, and while a cool change was expected during the evening, an unusual, rapid drop in temperature occurred just after 3pm. A sudden increase in cloud cover over the city, coinciding with a strengthening of northwesterly winds (37 km/h), triggered a very brief rain shower, dropping the temperature to almost 25 degrees (in around half an hour). This relief however was not actually the cool change forecast from an approaching cold front.

Once the cloud cover had passed, temperatures quickly increased again to 31 degrees by 5pm; Sydney therefore feeling the daily maximum twice in one day. The added humidity may have made temperatures feel even warmer than actual. The forecasted cool change as winds shifted to a more southerly direction, did finally arrive at around 8pm, however the 'fake' cool change actually provided more relief in a shorter period of time compared to the 'real' cool change.

After this cool change, Sydney today is expected to reach a pleasant top of 25 degrees, however more heat is on the way with Tuesday forecast to reach a hot 35 degrees.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
