A warm week for Sydney

Thomas Hough, Sunday December 16, 2018 - 13:29 AEDT

Sydney could be in for its warmest run of days so far this season in the coming week.

Temperatures are expected to peak in the high 20's to end this weekend and start the new working week, remaining in the high 20's on Tuesday and Wednesday before the mercury could tip 30 on Thursday.

Thursday will likely be the warmest day of the week, and, should the city climb to 30 degrees it would make it only the second time this month.

Should Sydney reach these temperatures, taking into account the previous two days, at 27 and 28 degrees, this would make a run of 7 days at least 2 degrees warmer than average and 7 consecutive days exceeding 26 degrees.

The warm weather is due to a low pressure trough to the city's west, which has been funneling heat down from the north over Queensland, and will continue to do so over the following few days.

It won't be all sunny skies however, as this peak heat on Thursday should be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.

Over the weekend before Christmas, temperatures look to cool into the low 20's, with more showers expected. There are tentative signs of further warmth building however, so don't write Christmas off as a gloomy one just yet.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
