Adelaide's early start to winter

James Casey, Saturday May 27, 2017 - 11:35 AEST

A pair of fronts are set to bring a chilly start to winter for the South Australian capital.

The first of two cold fronts is set to impact Adelaide this afternoon causing a dramatic five-to-eight degree drop in temperature. The front will bring rain, gusty westerly winds and a colder change that will bring the start of the coldest four days in Adelaide since September last year.

Showers and gusty winds will continue into tomorrow with the temperature only expected to reach 16 degrees, with wind chill making it feel two-to-three degrees cooler. Showers and winds will ease late on Sunday into Monday morning before the second front approaches. Monday should warm to about 17 degrees before rain starts up again with a pre-frontal trough in the afternoon.

This stronger second front comes with more model uncertainty. There is the chance a low could form with the front, which would bring the risk of damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. If the low forms it would also slow down the system, meaning strong winds and heavy rain would start late Monday night and last all day on Tuesday. The other option is a low doesn't form and the front sweeps through overnight on Monday and clearing up by midday on Tuesday.

Either way a colder airmass will keep the temperature down, unlikely to warm much past the mid teens on Tuesday.

Behind this front, a high will begin to build allowing conditions to calm down but causing overnight temperatures to drop to a chilly five degrees or so on Thursday. Daytime temperatures will remain in the mid to high teens until the weekend.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
