It's going to be a balmy night for the 50,000 strong crowd at the Adelaide Oval tonight, while the Richmond Army should brace for a blustery change from the west on Saturday.

Warmer than average conditions are spreading across much of northern and eastern Australia today, as a significant cold front blasts southern parts of Western Australia.

Northerly winds ahead of this front are transporting warm air from inland Australia across Adelaide today, pushing the afternoon maximum temperature towards the 30 degree mark. Temperatures will slip back into the low twenties or high teens during the game, as the warm airstream persists from the north.

The higher temperatures make dew unlikely, so it should be dry fast paced football between the Crows and the Cats. Winds will only be light to moderate in strength, creating a perfect night for players and spectators.

On Saturday, nearly 90,000 Tiger supporters will pour into the MCG hoping to see their team make its first grand final since 1982.

While the day will start out warm in Melbourne, with a top of 25 degrees, a cooler and blustery westerly wind change is due just before the first bounce. With this wind change comes the risk of a brief shower or thunderstorm, but prolonged rainfall is unlikely. Whether these conditions help either the Tigers or Greater Western Sydney remains to be seen, but if there is any wind advantage for scoring inside the swirling MCG it will be to the Punt Road end. A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
