Australian snow depth update

Australia's natural snow depth has increased for the third consecutive week, with more fresh powder on the way in the coming days.

This week's natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW was 99.8cm, measured on Wednesday, July 18th. While this is more than 10cm higher than the same time last year, it's slightly below the long-term average for this point in the season.

Following a huge weekly gain of 74cm at Spencers Creek in mid-June, the rate of snow accumulation has slowed during the last month thanks to a lack of strong fronts coinciding with abundant moisture. Following a small drop in depth in late-June, there has been a net snow gain of just 30cm during the last three weeks.

South of the border, the natural snow depth at Mt Hotham was sitting at 80cm on Wednesday this week. This is exactly the same depth that was measured at the site a month ago on June 18th.

Looking ahead, a cold front will bring 15-30cm of fresh snow to the alps between Thursday and Saturday this week, most of which will fall on Thursday night and Friday.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
