Blizzards followed by blue skies

Graeme Brittain, Wednesday July 18, 2018 - 18:56 AEST

A strong cold front will bring a dumping of snow and damaging winds to the Alps later on Thursday into Friday.

Around 10-25 cm of snow is expected to fall over the resorts over a 12 hour period, with snow falling down to about 1000m.

Wind gusts well in excess of 100 km/h are likely across exposed alpine areas of NSW and Victoria, which will cause snow to drift and bring visibility down to under 100m times.

The system will clear through Friday, allowing winds to ease and visibility to drastically improve in time for the weekend, with weak winds and predominantly clear skies.

Weather conditions over the weekend will be great for hitting the slopes.
