Brief relief from the heat in eastern NSW

Sydney will have one of its coolest days so far this year on Tuesday as a southerly change affects eastern NSW.

The gusty change will sweep up the central coastline of NSW tonight before spreading along the state's northern coast on Tuesday.

Cool air from the Tasman Sea will bring respite from the recent heat behind the wind change, with some areas forecast to have one of their coolest days since December.

Showers are also likely to accompany the wind change, further cooling some areas and dampening parched parks and gardens.

Sydney's forecast top of 23 degrees on Tuesday would make it one of the city's coolest days so far this year and three degrees below average for February. The coldest day of the year to date was 22 degrees.

The milder weather is likely to be a welcome change from the warm and muggy conditions that have dominated eastern NSW in recent weeks.

Up until Monday, Sydney was running two degrees warmer than usual in terms of maximum temperatures so far this month, while nights had been more than a degree above average as well.

January was also warmer than average by similar margins for both maximum and minimum temperatures.

Looking ahead, the mercury will climb again during the second half of the week, reaching the thirties in Sydney this weekend.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
