Brisbane finally got a storm

Ben Domensino, Friday March 17, 2017 - 18:23 AEDT

Brisbane recorded more rain this afternoon than the last six weeks combined.

Unlike previous weeks, where Brisbane missed out on the storms rolling through southeast Queensland, today there was a direct hit on the city.

This afternoon's storms brought 37mm of rain in 10 minutes and by 4pm, 42mm had reached the city's gauge. This is Brisbane's heaviest rain in two months.

Amid the storms, footage emerged of a rotating column of air near Brisbane Airport. While some people thought this may have been a tornado, the Bureau of Meteorology stated that it was most likely a landspout. These have some similarities to tornadoes but are much weaker.

Storms will continue to affect southeast Queensland this weekend and more severe storms are possible.
