Brisbane storm

Ben Domensino, Wednesday November 30, 2016 - 17:11 AEDT

Brisbane took a direct hit from a severe thunderstorm this afternoon, sending social media wild with storm snaps.

The hashtag #bnestorm got a workout as the storm cell approached Brisbane from the southeast. Brisbane is the only capital city in Australia to have a well known hashtag dedicated to the thunderstorms.

Today's storm moved over the border from New South Wales shortly after 1pm before gaining strength as it pushed through the Scenic Rim and Logan areas.

A warning was issued for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall as the storm rumbled through southeast Queensland.

Despite weakening slightly before reaching the Brisbane CBD, it was still intense enough to be dangerous when it reached the city around 4pm.

A rain gauge at Maroon received 26mm of rain in one hour, with reports of hail in a number of areas as the storm passed through. As of 3:30pm local time, the strongest wind gusts that had been recorded were 76km/h at Amberley and 78km/h at Archerfield.

It will be another stormy day tomorrow in southeast Queensland and there is a chance that Brisbane could see another severe storm on the first day of summer.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
