Canberra welcomes the warmth and rain

Kim Westcott, Saturday August 4, 2018 - 13:01 AEST

Warm and windy conditions ended the working week, with finally some good falls for the ACT.

Breezy northwesterly winds helped the capital record a top temperature of 19.5 degrees on Friday, which was the hottest August day since 2015. The average maximum temperature for August is 13 degrees.

Rain finally arrived on Friday evening with a cold front, with 14mm landing in the rain gauge. This is more rain than Canberra saw in the whole month of July. In fact, July's monthly total of 7.8mm was the driest July since 1982. Nearby rainfall was just as good last night with Mt Ginini picking up 18mm and Tuggeranong collecting 14mm.

It will be a slightly cooler day today, only hitting 13 degrees. However, the mercury will rebound somewhat by Sunday, with a sunny day and a top of 16 expected.

Another front will bring a few more showers and some much cooler conditions for the start of the working week, with Monday to Wednesday all looking to remain below 12 degrees. Tuesday is looking to be the coldest with a current forecast of 10 degrees.

However, there looks to be a few warmer days at the end of the week - so keep the shorts handy.
