Change spreading through Queensland

Parts of central Queensland are having their warmest July day in more than 20 years today, while the southeast shivers.

Warm air is flowing into central Queensland today ahead of a cold front that is sweeping over the state's south.

Mackay Airport had reached 28.9 degrees by 3pm local time, which was its highest July temperature in at least 22 years.

Hamilton Island's 26.8 degrees prior to 3pm today made this its warmest July day in 12 years.

By contrast, it has been much cooler in the state's southeast today.

Brisbane had only reached 19 degrees by three o'clock, which is seven degrees cooler than yesterday. Gusty westerly winds in the city made it feel even cooler than this, with the apparent temperature sitting below 15 degrees for most of the day. A wind gust of 50km/h was recorded in the city shortly after midday.

Mackay will only reach the low twenties tomorrow as the cool air affecting Brisbane heads further north.

Brisbane will feel a few degrees warmer tomorrow thanks to lighter winds, which is sure to please locals that don't cope well in a wintry chill.
