Cold and frosty lead-up to the last weekend of April

Jacobus Cronje, Wednesday April 26, 2017 - 11:00 AEST

Frosty morning temperatures are expected over Victoria and New South Wales on Thursday.

A major cold front is set to cross the southeast parts of Australia today, with clear skies and cold air in the system's wake likely leading to the first frost of the season for non-alpine areas and coldest morning so far this year in New South Wales on Thursday.

Early morning temperatures below 10 degrees have been forecast for at least some towns in each district of the two states, while many locations across NSW will likely experience temperatures close to zero.

The first crunch of frost under the boot is also going to be heard in places like Canberra, Braidwood, Oberon, Bathurst and Armidale.

It's not the first time this month that the winter blankets have had to come out. Earlier in April, a pool of cold air in the wake of a cold front led to temperatures plunging well below the 10 degree mark to the west and over the ranges, while dropping to -1.3 degrees in Cabramurra. Decent snowfalls of 10-20cm were also recorded in the alpine region. About 5cm of fresh snow should be dusting the alpine tops following the latest cold front.

Overall, it will be the coldest morning so far this year for southeast Australia, and potentially the coldest April morning in two years for most of NSW.

South Australia has also not escaped the cold. Temperatures in the wake of the front plummeted to just four degrees at Naracoorte and Mount Lofty in South Australia this morning.

Evening and early morning temperatures are expected to slowly rise in coming days in time for the last weekend of the month, but certainly not significantly. Frost is still likely for places like Canberra, Yass, Tralga, Cooma and Cabramurra on Friday and Saturday, while daytime temperatures across the state are unlikely to reach much beyond 20 degrees before Saturday afternoon.
