Cyclone Debbie update

Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie is close to making landfall on Queensland's central coast.

The eye has passed over Hayman Island and will cross the mainland coast shortly. 

The full force of Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie was felt on the whitsunday Islands this morning as Hamilton Island recorded a wind gust of 263km/h at 10:35am. This was the strongest gust in at least 15 years for the site. Proserpine Airport had a gust of 146km/h during the late morning, equalling the site's record set in 2010 during Tropical Cyclone Ului.

Mount William, west of Mackay, registered 470mm of rain during the 24 hours to 9am today as heavy rain affected a large swathe of central eastern Queensland. Flooding has developed in response to this deluge and moderate flood warnings are in place for the Don and Pioneer Rivers.

Very destructive winds are likely near the cyclone's centre as it makes landfall and destructive gust may extend along the coast to Townsville and Cape Hillsborough and inland to Charters Towers and Mount Coolon later today.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
