Dangerous surf in NSW

Large and powerful surf will affect the NSW coastline for the next two days as a low pressure system deepens over the Tasman Sea.

Strong winds circulating the Tasman Low in a clockwise direction are causing a large southerly swell to make its way up the NSW coast this week.

On Tuesday, maximum wave heights reached 4.7 metres off the coast near of Sydney, while the wave buoy at Coffs Harbour registered heights up to 7.8 metres.

The powerful swell will cause dangerous surf conditions along most of the state's coastline tomorrow, particularly at south-facing beaches. A hazardous surf warning has been issued between Smoky Cape and the Victorian border on Wednesday.

Dangerous surf will linger into Thursday before calmer conditions return from Friday.
