Fire bans issued as heat builds

Total fire bans have been issued in multiple states on Tuesday as temperatures rise in Australia's southeast inland.

Hot northerly winds freshening ahead of an approaching trough will elevate the threat of uncontrollable bushfires in northwest Victoria, eastern SA and western NSW on Tuesday.

Victoria's Country Fire Authority has declared tomorrow as a day of Total Fire Ban, meaning that no fires are to be lit between midnight and midnight.

Mildura's forecast of 38 degrees would be its hottest day in nine months and wind speeds may reach 30km/h in the Mallee during the day.

Conditions are likely to be worse across the border in South Australia, where temperatures will reach close to 40 degrees and average wind speeds could exceed 40km/h. These conditions have prompted the state's Country Fire Service to issue total fire bans in the Murraylands and Riverland Districts, where the fire danger ratings are expected to reach Severe.

The threat of fires will also be elevated in far western NSW, where temperatures will reach 37-38 degrees in the afternoon.
