Freezing night for southern Australia

Thomas Hough, Saturday November 4, 2017 - 12:58 AEDT

Last night saw temperatures dip below freezing in a number of places across southeast South Australia and western and central Victoria.

A broad area of high pressure over the Great Australian Bight, combined with a cold airmass, light winds and clear skies lead to some areas seeing their coldest November night in quite a number of years.

In Victoria, Longerenong and Sheoaks both dropped below freezing, -0.8 and -0.2 degrees respectively, well below the long term average of 9 degrees. These temperatures make last night the coldest November night in 49 years for Longerenong and 26 years for Sheoaks. The Melbourne area also got a taste of winter again with Tullamarine dipping to 4 degrees, its coldest November night in 19 years.

In the Alps, Mount Buller was close to breaking its November record (-5.5 degrees in 2009), reaching a chilly -5.4 degrees!

Southeastern Australia couldn't escape the cold either with Strathalbyn (-1.7 degrees) and Padthaway (-0.8 of a degree) shivering their way through their coldest November nights in more than 60 years and 40 years respectively.

Nights should gradually warm over the next week despite remaining below average until about next weekend, so keep the blankets handy for a while longer!
