Freezing start to Thursday

Australia registered its lowest June temperature in eight years on Thursday morning as frost formed in every state and territory.

Clear skies, light winds and a lingering mass of cool air combined to send the mercury plummeting across a large area of southern and central Australia during Wednesday night.

Thursday morning's minimum temperatures were low enough to cause frost in every state and territory, including southern parts of Queensland and the NT.

Western Australia's Salmon Gums cooled to -4.6 degrees shortly before 7am, it's lowest June temperature in 12 years. Norseman Airport's -4.9 degrees was its coldest June morning since 2010.

Further east, Alice Springs dipped to -0.1 degrees and South Australia's Padthaway reached a low of -2.2 degrees. This was Padthaway's lowest temperature in two years, for any month.

The lowest temperatures in Australia on Thursday morning were recorded in the alps, where artificial snowmaking was in full swing across the ski resorts.

In Victoria, Falls Creek hit -8.1 degrees and Mount Buller -7.6, their lowest June temperatures 12 years.

The NSW alps were even colder, with Perisher Valley reaching a numbing -12 degrees and Thredbo Top Station -10 degrees. This was Perisher's lowest June temperature in records dating back to 2010 and Thredbo's lowest for June in four years.

Perisher Valley's -12 degrees was also Australia's lowest June temperature since 2011.

Large areas of inland NSW were covered by frost on Thursday morning as the mercury plummeted across the state's ranges, slopes and plains. Cobar Airport reached -4.4 degrees, which was their coldest June temperature in 17 years. Orange Airport's -5.2 degrees was their lowest for June in four years.

Queensland's St George had its first morning below freezing so far this year, reaching a low of -1.0 degrees.

Tasmania's lowest official temperature was -3.4 degrees at Cressy, with Launceston also dropping to -2 degrees.

Australia's southern capital cities were all prone to shivers on Thursday morning, with the following minimum temperatures:

Canberra -4.4 degrees (coldest so far this year)

Hobart 3.7 degrees

Perth 4.4 degrees

Sydney 6.1 degrees (coldest so far this year)

Melbourne 6.4 degrees

Adelaide 7.4 degrees

Australia's lowest June temperature on record was -23 degrees at Charlotte Pass, NSW in 1994.
