From record-heat to snow in Tasmania

Snow is falling in Tasmania today, just four days after the state experienced it hottest March weather on record.

Autumn is a time of contrasting weather in southern Australia, as hot air lingering over the mainland after summer clashes with cold air surging out of the Southern Ocean.

Tasmania is feeling the effects of this cold air today, with snow settling on some of its southern mountains and temperatures struggling to reach the mid-teens in Hobart.

Snow is forecast to fall down to 800 metres above sea level in southern Tasmania today and a dusting had already settled on Mount Mawson by 10am.

Today's taste of wintry weather comes less than a week after the state endured a day of record-breaking March heat.

Dover's 40.1 degrees on Sunday was the first time on record any location in Tasmania has exceeded 40 degrees during March.

Eight other weather stations, including Hobart (39.1C), also beat Tasmania's previous March maximum temperature record of 38.0 degrees on Sunday.

Impressively, Hobart's 39.1 degrees on Sunday was also hotter than any day in the city during summer. Last season's highest temperature was 37.9 degrees.

Sunday's heat now seems like a distant memory, as much colder southwesterly winds flow over the state today.

Hobart was only sitting on 13 degrees at 10am, although wind chill was making it feel more like eight degrees.

Temperatures will rebound a bit from tomorrow, reaching a near-average top of 21 degrees in Hobart.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
