Fronts and troughs leading to seesaw temperatures in southeast Australia

Jacobus Cronje, Saturday September 23, 2017 - 14:12 AEST

Cloud cover and wind direction changes are conspiring to make for very fast changes in temperature over parts of Victoria and NSW on Saturday.

In Moorabbin, temperatures in the late morning fell by nearly 8 degrees in 10 minutes in the wake of a cold front, although it quickly recovered to 29 degrees about an hour later.

Temperatures over parts of the eastern seaboard have also felt a drop, with temperatures at Bellambi having dropped 4 degrees in 10 minutes shortly before midday in developing sea breezes.

Further north and inland, it's unlikely that soaring, record-breaking September heat will be significantly affected by weak changes and sea breezes over the weekend, mainly due to the very hot airmass being transported from the interior, ahead of the system.

Although Melbourne is set to exceed 29 degrees on Saturday, another, stronger cold front will cool the city down to the high teens on Sunday, eventually dropping temperature over NSW on Monday.
