Frosty morning for NSW

Parts of New South Wales have just endured their coldest morning in decades and there is more on the way.

A broad slow moving high pressure system brought crystal clear skies and very dry, light winds to large swathes of NSW overnight. This coupled with a lingering pool of cold air saw temperatures plummet on Saturday morning.

Some of the more impressive temperatures were in the Central West Slopes and Plains where Parkes chilled to -6.3 degree, the coldest night in more than 60 years. Dubbo's -5.8 was the coldest night in 78 years. Further west, Fowlers Gap had their equal coldest night in 14 years with a low of -3.2. In the north of the state Narrabri cooled to -4.4 (coldest in 7 years) and Moree to -1.8 (coldest in 6 years).

In the east, even Sydney couldn't escape of the frigid morning. Richmond and Penrith both had their coldest morning in three years dropping to -2.2 degrees and 0.4 degrees respectively. The Harbour City itself cooled to 6.2 degrees making it the coldest morning of the year so far.

Canberra extended its run of subzero mornings to six with a frosty -6.5 and it didnâ??t climb out of the freezing temperatures until 9am.

The slow moving high will bring similar conditions on Sunday and Monday mornings with some places likely to be even colder than they were on Saturday. In Sydney subzero temperatures are likely to be more widespread in the western suburbs and getting as low as -3 in suburbs such as Richmond, Camden and Campbelltown. The city itself is forecast to drop to 5 degrees on Sunday and potentially lower on Monday.

The high will be replaced by an approaching trough and cold front on Tuesday which will bring an increase in winds and cloud cover over much of the state, leading to more mild morning temperatures.
