Frosty weekend ahead

It might be hard getting out of bed in parts of central and southeastern Australia this weekend, with widespread frost likely across multiple states and territories.

A high pressure system will cause relatively clear skies and light winds over Australia’s central and southeastern states on Saturday and Sunday. At this time of year, these conditions are ideal for frost as overnight temperatures plummet.

The mercury will dip low enough for frost to form in parts of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW, the ACT, South Australia, the NT, and Queensland on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Some areas could get cold enough for severe frosts.

A road weather alert has already been issued for Tasmania’s Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley, and South East forecast districts for Saturday morning, due to icy roads. A frost warning has also been issued for Saturday morning in Victoria’s Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, and Central forecast districts. Both of these warnings are likely to be repeated for Sunday morning in some areas.

While cold and frosty mornings are not unexpected at this time of year, some places are forecast to drop more than five degrees below average for a June morning.

Alice Springs reached -0.4 degrees on Friday morning and is forecast to hit -1 degree on Saturday morning. Further south, Melbourne’s minimums are tipped to reach around 3-5 degrees each morning from Saturday to Monday.

While an extra layer of wool might be required in many areas this weekend, we are unlikely to challenge Australia’s minimum temperature record of -23 degrees from Charlotte Pass in June 1994.
