Get the Bucket and Broome

Broome is fast approaching its annual rainfall record, after 1371mm has fallen in the gauge so far this year.

In the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday, Broome received 370.4mm, its wettest February day in 129 years of records. This smashed the previous record from 1932 by 68mm.

In addition to the persistent rain and thick cloud, Broome also shivered through its lowest February maximum temperature on record, with a top of only 25.2 degrees on Friday.

Broome can expect these conditions to continue over this weekend as a tropical low potentially develops into a tropical cyclone. Broome is currently in the warning zone and could receive gale force winds within 24 hours.

This comes after the wettest month in Broome's 129 year record during January this year (915.6mm). 412.2mm fell on Tuesday 30th alone, the second highest daily rainfall total. As expected, soil moisture is nearly saturated, including the deep soil.

This makes 2018 the 3rd wettest year on record for Broome, behind 1997 (1452.4mm) and 2000 (1496.6mm), with 1371mm falling after only 48 days.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
