Gusty thunderstorms threaten NYE parties in NSW

Kim Westcott, Monday December 31, 2018 - 16:47 AEDT

A broad trough stretching across New South Wales is producing potentially severe thunderstorms across the state this afternoon and evening.

Currently, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning extends across large parts of southern and central NSW, including parts of western Sydney. These storms may produce damaging wind gusts, with Parkes recently recording an 82 km/h gust. Earlier this afternoon, Ivanhoe recorded an 80km/h gust.

Along with gusty thunderstorms, this trough is bringing a few showers, but generally falls look to be only 5-10mm for most places.

For northern NSW residents, this trough will come your way during Tuesday and Wednesday. However, while storms are still possible, falls will be lighter and mainly about the ranges.
