Heat ending in Adelaide, rain on the way

A record-breaking spell of April heat will come to an end in Adelaide tonight as a cool change sweeps across the city.

As temperatures soar across South Australia this week, Adelaide is currently experiencing its hottest spell of April days on record.

The city registered three days in a row at or above 34 degrees between Sunday and Tuesday, which has never previously been recorded during April. This record spell is likely to reach four days this afternoon as the city heads towards a forecast top of 36 degrees.

If Adelaide manages to reach 37 degrees this afternoon, it will be the city's highest April temperature on record. The previous record was 36.9 degrees at the Kent Town site in 2005.

The current spell of record-breaking late season heat comes after Adelaide's driest start to a year since 1989, with only 14mm falling in the gauge at West Terrace during the first three months of 2018.

Adelaide's oppressive April heat will give way to cooler southwesterly winds as a front reaches the city this evening.

Temperatures are forecast to be 12 degrees cooler in the city behind the change on Thursday, and these milder conditions will be here to stay.

Maximum temperatures should only reach the low to mid twenties from tomorrow until at least the middle of next week in Adelaide, which is near-average for this time of year.

The parched city is also likely to pick up some much needed rain on Friday and Saturday as another front passes over Adelaide. This could be the best rain in 3-4 months of Adelaide and other parts of the state.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
