Heavy rain pummels NSW and QLD

Saturday night turned into a real soaker for parts of Queensland and New South Wales, as a low pressure trough moved through.

Severe thunderstorms fired up in both states on Saturday afternoon, with over 180 000 lightning strikes detected.

In NSW Ballina picked up 98mm to 9am Sunday, which was the wettest day since September. At Cape Byron, 13mm of rain fell in 10 minutes, with 56mm by 9am Sunday. Lismore picked up 47mm , making it the wettest November day in since 2013. Dorrigo saw 42mm, its wettest November day in three years.

But the real action was in QLD, with intense rain recorded yesterday afternoon and evening at Toowoomba (18 mm in 10 minutes), Gold Coast (12mm in 10 minutes), with Double Island Point, Redland and Sunshine Coast all recording rain rates of 10mm in 10 minutes. Gympie picked up its first November rain for this year, with 31mm landing in the bucket.

The trough causing these storms will retract inland slightly over the next few days. While showers and storms are likely to continue across parts of QLD and northern NSW, pockets of heavy rain falling over short periods may lead to flash flooding. Aside from the heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and large hail is also a risk with any thunderstorm.

By midweek, another trough moving across the country from the west will interact with the current through, with widespread showers and thunderstorms possible.
