Heavy rain to continue over northern QLD

It has been raining solidly since Christmas Eve for parts of tropical QLD, with potential for heavy rain to continue past New Years Day.

Cairns racecourse has picked up 425mm of rain over the past five days, while nearby at Cairns airport 355mm has fallen in the same period, which is double the average December rainfall.

It's a similar story at Cooktown Airport, with the past five days collecting 344mm, making it the wettest December since records began at the site 18 years ago.

Innisfail has also had a soggy few days, with 200mm over the past five days, with the current total now up to 750mm for December, although there are several other sites in the region which have seen over 1000mm this December such as Cardwell Marine Parade, Lucinda Township and Halifax.

The lingering low pressure trough which is bringing all this rain shows no sign of letting up, with heavy rain on the forecast until at least New Years Eve.

For some places north of Cairns, intense rain could continue into early January, especially if a low pressure system develops near the coast.

BoM declares El Niño over
