Impending heat prompts fire bans in SA

Total fire bans have been issued in three districts of South Australia on Thursday, with temperatures set to soar across the state.

Northerly winds strengthening ahead of an approaching trough will draw intense inland heat down through the state.

The mercury is expected to reach 46 degrees in the Pastoral Districts on Thursday and Adelaide is forecast to climb nine degrees above average to 38 in the afternoon.

The combination of hot and windy weather has prompted authorities to issue total fire bans in the Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges and Lower South East Districts.

Looking ahead, a cool change will sweep over most of the state during Thursday night and Friday morning, before spreading through the remaining northeast later on Friday.

Cooler conditions and lower fire danger ratings will return to South Australia for the weekend.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
