Late-season boost for Australian snowfields

The snowiest week of the year has begun. For the main resorts, as much as 35-60 centimetres of fresh snow has already fallen since Sunday and another 35-60 centimetres to come, taking the natural snow depth to not only a season high but the highest in several years.
Snow has been falling as low as about 600 metres on the NSW Alps and as low as about 400 metres on the Victorian Alps. The very cold and windy spell with frequent heavy snowfalls and blizzards will ease from mid week as cold fronts become progressively weaker.
By the weekend, under clearing skies, the natural snow cover should be well over 200cm deep at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek and over 250cm deep at Thredbo/Perisher. This would make it the deepest in more than 15 years.
Further fresh snow is likely during mid next week when the next fronts arrive, unfortunately not so much and not as cold due to the fronts looking relatively weak.
