Late season heat in NSW

A burst of late season heat is affecting NSW today, but colder weather is on the way.

Northwesterly winds ahead of an approaching cold front will push temperatures 5-10 degrees above average across a large area of the state on Monday.

Sydney is forecast to reach 32 degrees in the city, which is 9.5 degrees above average for April.

In observations dating back to 1859, only 13 days have been this hot this late in the season at Sydney's Observatory Hill weather station, located in the city. These 13 days were scattered across the last 99 years, with three occurring in 2018, 1969 and 1922.

Further west, Cobar's forecast top of 34 degrees on Monday is nine above average for this time of year.

Cooler southerly winds will spread over NSW on Tuesday, reaching central districts during the afternoon and the state's northeast overnight.

Temperatures will be around 10 degrees cooler in the middle of this week behind thie change. Sydney is only forecast to reach 21 degrees on Wednesday.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
