Melbourne shakes off the heat

With back-to-back 40 degrees days and a stinker of a night in between, Melbourne's long awaited cool change was rapid.

Melbourne has had rough couple of days with the mercury reaching 41 degrees on Thursday and 43 degrees on Friday. If that wasn't bad enough, sleeping was a tough task as it was still 31 degrees on Thursday midnight.

Thankfully the promised and long awaited change was a strong one, pushing the hot airmass north and causing rapid temperature drops throughout the city and surrounds.

The largest drop was recorded at Western Port at noon on Friday, which cooled 14 degrees in 10 minutes, with similar cooling for Cerberus with 13 degrees in 10 minutes at 1pm.

The cool change took a little bit longer to reach the city, but when it did the temperature dropped from 42 degrees to a more comfortable 27 degrees in less than half an hour.

While Melbournians where throwing open the windows and venturing outside, it was still 45 degrees at the airport which is only 20 km to the north. Eventually the change came through at 2:30pm, finally bringing relief.

Typically Melbourne days average 26 degrees in January, with only one-or-two 40 degree days each year. This January, Melbourne has seen three days which have reached 40 degrees or higher.

Looking ahead, temperatures will be much more comfortable, peaking in the mid 20's over the weekend, warming into the high 20's on Monday. By Tuesday and Wednesday, northerly winds will bring some inland heat towards the city but another strong cool change is due later on Thursday.
