Melbourne's mild run nearly over

With a trifecta of 20 degree days on the cards for Melbourne, residents
are encouraged to make the most of these final warm days.

A low pressure trough will approach later on Monday, with northerly winds
bringing warmer conditions despite the cloudy skies. Showers are likely
from about Monday evening and throughout Tuesday morning and afternoon.
This will be the most rain Melbourne has seen in about two weeks, which is
great news for the gardens, the ducks and the dams.

As a cold front catches up, further showers are likely, but also the cold
air and brisk winds. Daytime temperatures are likely to plummet from
Wednesday, with most suburbs struggling to reach the mid-teens for the
remainder of the week.

Typically May days average around 17 degrees in Melbourne. Although it
won't be the coldest day Melbourne has seen this month (12.8 degrees on
Thursday 10th), gusty winds will certainly make it feel very cold at
times.

Interestingly, Melbourne has seen above-average rainfall this month, with
nearly 60mm falling over 12 rain days so far. It has been several months
since this has last occurred, with water storage in the Melbourne region
at 59% across the catchment. This system should bring another 5-15mm
before we move into the historically drier winter months.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
