Morning low cloud and fog blanket parts of southern Victoria

Early risers in Victoria were greeted to blanketing low cloud and areas of fog this morning, in the wake of a recent rainfall event.
Clearing overnight skies that followed a cold front allowed for heat near the surface of the earth to escape rapidly, cooling the air fast enough for the now moist layer to condence into areas of extensive low cloud and fog.
Visbility went down to as low as 50 metres in places like Kilmore Gap, and about 250 metres at Hamilton Airport. Melbourne saw more low cloud than fog, with cloud base at the airport down to about 1000 feet around 9am.
It is not uncommon for fog to form during any season, given the right atmospheric conditions. The rule of thumb is that if there are clear skies overnight following a rainfall event, fog formation is possible, especially if winds are light.
Southern parts of VIC (including Melbourne) could see fog patches again on Sunday morning, with plenty of moisture from recent rainfall, clear overnight skies and weak winds - the perfect recipe for a murky morning.
