Darwin Airport registered its second warmest day on record on Monday.
Temperatures soared over the western Top End during Monday morning as hot and dry inland air flowed towards the coast.
The mercury reached a top of 38.2 degrees at Darwin Airport at 12:30pm, shortly before a sea breeze dropped the temperature by a few degrees and raised the relative humidity. This was the site's second highest temperature in 78 years of records, beaten only by 38.9 degrees in October 1982.
Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-thirties in Darwin from Tuesday to Thursday, before cooling down a bit later in the week.
