North Queensland chills

Some inland areas of Northern Queensland have had their coldest April morning in at least 60 years.

The mercury at Mt Isa plummeted to 5.8 degrees last night, making it the coldest April morning since records began in 1957. This was an impressive 12.7 degrees below the April average minimum of 18.5 degrees.

Georgetown (9.6C) and Century Mine (11.4C) also had their coldest April mornings in at least 12 years. Over the Northern Territory border, Borroloola equaled their 20-year April record of 9.0 degrees.

Burketown shivered through its second cold night with temperatures falling to 13.9 degrees. Saturdays minimum of 13.3 degrees was the coldest April morning in at least 12 years.

These chilly conditions were due to cool, dry air from a cold front last week. With clear skies and calm winds, the mercury plummeted through the night. Overnight temperatures look to gradually warm up through the week as the cold airmass decays.
