NSW severe storm update

A line of intense thunderstorms moved through parts of central and northern NSW on Monday afternoon.

The band of storms storms developed along a trough of low pressure that is crossing the state from west to east today. Dry westerly winds in the wake of the trough forced warmer, moisture-laden air ahead of it to rise rapidly, producing violent storms.

A particularly dangerous storm cell caused extensive damage in Kurri Kurri early this afternoon, with reports of roofs torn from buildings and uprooted trees.

A weather station at Murrurundi Gap in the Hunter District registered a wind gust of 100km/h shortly before 2pm, around the same time a different storm cell produced 11mm of rain in 10 minutes at Cessnock.

For the second day in a row, large hail has fallen in NSW. Hailstones measuring 4cm in diameter - roughly the size of a golf ball - slammed into the ground at Narrabri shortly before 3:30pm.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
