Perth just had its driest May in more than half a century.
Rainfall usually starts picking up in Perth during May as cold fronts start to become more active over southwestern Australia.
This month, blocking areas of high pressure have ket these rain-bearing fronts away from southwestern Australia.
Perth has only collected 17.8mm of rain since the beginning of the month and is unlikely to see anything in the gauge before 9am on Friday. This will make it the city's driest May since 1964 and the second driest May in 139 years of records.
Perth has also experienced its driest start to a year in since 2009, with only 76mm falling in the city during the last five months.
Further north, Geraldton has only seen 1.6mm of rain this month, making it their driest May in records dating back to the 1940s. This has been Geraldton's driest start to a year on record, with only 5.6mm in the gauge during the first five months of 2019.
