Parts of Sydney brace for wild weather on Tuesday

A burst of damaging winds, heavy rain and damaging surf will lash parts of the Sydney Basin on Tuesday morning, causing dangerous weather during the city’s morning commute.

A low pressure trough extending out of a deepening low pressure system in the Tasman Sea will sweep along the central coast of NSW on Tuesday morning.

This trough will cause a powerful southerly change to move along Sydney’s coastline early in the morning, most likely around 6am to 7am, give or take an hour.

Rain will develop in the blustery onshore flow behind the change, reducing visibility, wetting roads and turning umbrellas inside-out. Eastern suburbs could see 30-40mm of rain between 6am and midday, with higher totals possible along the coast.

The strongest winds will occur over the city’s eastern suburbs, with and behind the change. Gusts are likely to exceed 100km/h along the coastal fringe and may cause localised damage and fallen trees.

Blustery southerly winds will linger near the coast through the morning, driving large waves into exposed beaches and rock shelves. This big wind swell is likely to cause beach erosion and make all coastal activities dangerous.

Winds will be noticeably lighter in Sydney’s western suburbs on Tuesday morning, although damaging gusts are likely in the Blue Mountains.

BoM declares El Niño over
