Proper warmth coming to NSW but first a few chilly nights

Despite the talk of unseasonable warmth, nights and mornings will be a bit on the chilly side this weekend with some frost likely west of the ranges.

A high pressure system moving in quickly behind a dry cold front will lead to the chilly nights and mornings under mostly clear skies.

A thick swag or a heated tray-top ute will come in handy to those camping out at the annual Louth Races. Louth, about 100 kilometres southwest of Bourke, will cool to about three degrees early each morning.

Compounding the potentially tricky-for-sleeping nights will be the bright skies. A dry and mostly cloud-free atmosphere will increase the luminosity of the moon and brightest planets and stars.

No worries about the days at all, gentle winds and sunshine, allowing it to warm to the low twenties on Saturday and mid-twenties on Sunday.

For the Louth area, the proper warmth will peak on Monday night (only cooling to the mid teens) and Tuesday (warming to the low thirties), about 10 degrees above average when dusty northwesterly winds kick in ahead of a cooler change.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
