Quite the chill in the air over Victoria

Melbourne and the rest of Victoria has shivered through a very frosty morning, with a repeat scenario expected on Monday morning.

Melbourne dropped to a low of just 1.7 degrees in the early hours of Sunday morning, its coldest June morning in seven years. It was also its coldest morning for 22 months.

Other nearby locations of Avalon (1.3C), Laverton (0.0C), and Geelong (0.1C) also shivered through their coldest June morning since 2013. More broadly, most of Victoria was about 4-7 degrees below the June average, with every location in the state recording a below average morning. As it often is, Mount Hotham was the coolest, dropping to a crisp -4.6 degrees.

As with any temperatures below two degrees, widespread frosts were reported across Victoria, with some severe frosts occurring in the North East district.

This cold morning was brought about by a large high pressure system centered directly over the middle of Victoria, clearing skies, and producing almost no wind, the perfect ingredients for a cold morning.

With the high pressure system lingering over Victoria, another frosty morning is expected on Monday morning. With slightly more preferable conditions, it is possible it could even be colder than Sunday morning for some parts of the state, including Melbourne.

Mornings will start to warm up slightly from Tuesday as winds increase ahead of a front, bringing temperatures closer to the June average.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
