Rain and thunderstorms heading to northwest and central Australia

Sam Brown, Sunday September 22, 2019 - 12:21 AEST

An upper level trough drawing moisture from the tropical Indian Ocean may deliver some welcome rain to the Western Australia's Northern and Southern Interior and Northern Territory's Lasseter districts.

Light showers may begin to develop this afternoon about Kintore, Yuendumu and Haasts Bluff, gradually becoming more consistent, widespread and extending further east tomorrow and into Tuesday.

There is potential for some areas to receive over 15mm of accumulated rain in the next few days. The highest falls are expected to be between Kintore and Alice Springs.

Giles in WA may receive a few light showers and if so, it would be its first rain since April this year.

Thunderstorms are also a possibility during the next few days. Initially sparking up over the far east of WA's Pilbara and southern Kimberley and then spreading further east across the Northern Interior and then into the NT's Lasseter and southern parts of the Tanami.

Light showers may spread to far southwest QLD and western NSW on Wednesday, potentially reaching Bedourie, Birdsville and Tibooburra.
