Rain on the horizon for western Queensland

Parts of central western Queensland could receive their heaviest rain in three months this week.

A band of cloud stretching along a slow-moving low pressure trough will produce rain and thunderstorms over parts of western and central Queensland during the next few days.

Some areas in the state's Central West and North West Districts could pick up 10-20mm between Wednesday and Friday, with higher totals likely with any thunderstorm activity. This would be the heaviest rain since early March for this region.

The cloud and rain will also help keep a lid on daytime temperatures, with maximums forecast to be about three to five degrees below average. Emerald's predicted top of 19 degrees on Wednesday would be its coldest day in two years.

Drier weather will return from Friday as the low pressure trough moves off the state's east coast and a high pressure ridge develops in its place.
