Record dry start to 2019 in Melbourne

Melbourne is having its driest start to a year on record, with less than one third of the city's average rain falling during the last three months.

At 9am on Friday April 5th, Melbourne had only received 42.0mm of rain since the beginning of 2019. This is the city's lowest amount of rain to this point in the year on record, with data available back to the 1850's.

Melbourne would usually have picked up around 150mm of rain by this point in the year.

A lack of strong cold fronts during the last few months caused the record-dry start to the year in Melbourne.

Rainfall for the period from January and March was in the lowest 10 percent of historical records for much of central and western Victoria. For some places, it was the lowest on record for this period.

Wind returning to southeastern Australia

10:07 AEST After a prolonged period of light winds, a surge of powerful winds and cool air will push through southeastern Australia during the next 48 hours. As we wrote about last week the National Electricity Market (NEM) saw very low wind power generation during the seven days leading up to Thursday, April 18, with the daily wind generation having been under 41 GWh/day for this period. Wind power has improved slightly during the past week, with wind power increasing for a few days over last weekend.
