Record July warmth in Sydney

Ben Domensino, Friday July 6, 2018 - 15:03 AEST

Sydney just had its warmest pair of July days on record.

The temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill weather station has never exceeded 24.7 degrees on two consecutive days during July, until now.

The temperature in the city reached 24.8 degrees just before 2pm this afternoon, which is eight degrees above average for this time of year. With yesterday's maximum of 25.3 degrees, which was the city's hottest day on record for the first week of July, these have now been Sydney's warmest pair of July days in 159 years of records.

The previous record for July was two days at or above 24.7, which occurred in 1975.

Sydney's warmest July day on record was 26.5 degrees in 2017.

Maximums are likely drop below 20 degrees in Sydney on the weekend as cooler air moves in behind a wind change.
