Record spring heat in Victoria and Tasmania

Melbourne and Hobart both equalled their spring maximum temperature records on Thursday.


A stream of hot air ahead of an approaching cold front sent the mercury soaring across southeastern Australia on Thursday.

In Victoria, Melbourne reached 40.9 degrees at 2pm, matching the city's November maximum temperature record from 1894. This was also the earliest spring day to exceed 40 degrees in Melbourne. Elsewhere in the state, Laverton (42.4C), Wilsons Promontory (38.0C) and East Sale (40.8C) all had their warmest spring day on record.


Campania registered Tasmania's highest temperature on Thursday, reaching 38.3 degrees shortly after midday. This was the site's highest spring temperature in records dating back to 2000.


Hobart's 36.8 degrees was the city's equal highest spring temperature on record and its highest for November since 1937. It was also Hobart's earliest spring day to exceed 36 degrees.
