Record warm spring nights in Adelaide

Adelaide may be experiencing a spell of warm nights that has only occurred in the city on one other occasion during spring in the last 130 years.

A pool of warm air sitting over South Australia is producing a run of hot days and unusually warm nights in Adelaide.

The temperature in the city last night was still 29 degrees at midnight, which is warmer than any day in Brisbane during the last two weeks and any day in Sydney so far this month.

A few more hours of darkness saw the mercury reach a low of 25.1 degrees shortly before 6am, making it the city's warmest November night in three years. The previous morning only dipped to 23.6 degrees at West Terrace, which is about 10 degrees above average for this time of year.

If the temperature in the city remains above 23.5 degrees tonight, it will be only the second time in 130 years of records that Adelaide has stayed warmer than this for three consecutive nights during spring. The last time this happened was between October 31st and November 2nd in 1987.

The warmest minimum temperature recorded in Adelaide during November was 30.1 degrees in 1922.

Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below 20 degrees and a bit closer to the norm for this time of year later in the week.
