September Temperatures Set to Soar

Temperatures are set to build from Monday before peaking on Wednesday, with temperatures far exceeding the September average. Sydney will peak at a very balmy 31 degrees on Thursday, a whopping 10.9 degrees above the historical September average. Brisbane also looks set to reach 31 degrees on Thursday, again 5.5 degrees above average.

This midweek heat spell is the result of a warm airmass extending across Australia from the northwest. Parts of northwestern Western Australia can expect to a sweltering Thursday, with Broome looking to reach a top of 39 degrees. Even for a notoriously warm part of Australia that is still 7.2 degrees above the September average and only 1.3 degrees below the highest recorded September temperature for Broome.

Thursday will provide relief for eastern Australia, with a significant temperature drop expected. A cold front passing over the southeastern states should bring temperatures back down to the standard September fare.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
