Severe storms threaten QLD

Ben Domensino, Tuesday November 7, 2017 - 14:37 AEDT

Severe thunderstorms are targeting parts of Queensland today, with the potential for very dangerous storms in populated areas.

A low pressure trough that triggered a long band of thunderstorms across eastern Australia on Monday will produce violent storms in central and eastern Queensland today.

Any storms that develop in this region this afternoon and early evening have the potential to produce damaging winds and large hail, while heavy rain may also cause flash flooding in some areas.

The most intense storms are likely to develop near and to the east of the trough, in an area covering the Sunshine Coast region and the Wide Bay and Burnett and lower Capricornia Districts. Supercell thunderstorms are possible in this region and may cause giant hail or destructive wind gusts.

Today's storms come a day after the same trough helped produce golf ball sized hail in parts of NSW and powerful winds, which tore roofs from buildings in the stateā??s Hunter District.
