Showers and storms strike Queensland's tropical coast

Over 50mm of rain has fallen in parts of the Queensland North Tropical Coast with more rain forecast in the coming days.

The showers and storms were triggered by a low pressure trough working in concert with moist onshore winds. Highest falls were around and just south of the Innisfail region. In the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday South Johnstone recorded 65mm of rain whilst Mourilyan Mill picked up 63mm and the Innisfail Aerodrome 51mm.

The rain was heavy at times with 11.6mm falling in just 10 minutes at Cooktown and 10.2mm in the same amount of time at Cape Flattery. Rainfall rates this high are enough to bring localised flash flooding.

On Sunday the focus of the highest totals will shift north with totals of 25-50mm forecast between Innisfail and Cooktown, with isolated higher totals a possibility. Similar conditions will prevail on Monday and Tuesday though falls will gradually become lighter.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
