Showers dampen parts of Sydney

Drew Casper-Richardson, Sunday July 29, 2018 - 09:52 AEST

A low pressure trough brought some light showers to parts of the Sydney Basin in what has been a very dry month for large parts of New South Wales, including Sydney.

Overnight a low pressure trough brought some showers to the Harbour City, unfortunately these showers were isolated, light and brief. Most of the showers recorded were in the northern suburbs where a meagre 0.5mm - 1.4mm fell. Far western and southern suburbs generally missed out on the showers. The city itself picked up 1.4mm. This was the first rainfall in over three weeks and only the second day where any rain was recorded this month.

In Sydney the total rainfall for July is now 11.2mm - just 11.5% of the average. Should the total remain below 12.6mm (which is likely with no rain forecast in the coming days) it will be the driest July since 1995 when just 5.4mm fell. A cold front will move through the city on Sunday but is unlikely to bring any rainfall - only dry and gusty westerly winds.

At this stage the best chance for further rain comes on Friday or Saturday as another trough crosses the state.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
