Showery change in Australia's southeast on Friday

A burst of wind and showers will affect southeastern Australia on Friday with the passage of a cold front.

Showers will affect parts of South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and possibly far southern NSW on Friday, with some areas possible seeing thunderstorms as well. Unfortunately for those needing some decent rain, falls will generally be light form this system and most places will see less than 5mm of rain.

In addition to showers, northwesterly winds will strengthen ahead of the approaching front. A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued in the Victorian Alps, where gusts could reach 100km/h from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

The front will also drop temperatures by a few degrees as it sweeps through. Adelaide reached 24 degrees on Thursday and is only forecast to hit 21 on Friday and 18 on Saturday.

This will be the first in a series of cold fronts that will bring more widespread showers, storms and snow to parts of southeastern Australia during the next week.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
